Unfolding Wind (for Aesop)

Unfolding Wind

material | moso bamboo, rice paper, wood, iron, wire

Artist Cheng Tsung FENG is known for his creations that explore and reinterpret traditional handcraft cultures. For this installation commissioned by Aesop, he drew inspiration from the craft of folding fans—an artform deeply connected to wind.

By deconstructing the flat bamboo structures typically used in fan-making, FENG applied digital parametric modeling to transform and reinterpret the material. Reusing bamboo, wood, and hardware components from his previous outdoor installations, he crafted a four-meter-long sculptural form that flows with dynamic movement. The result is a lightweight, airy structure that appears to float effortlessly within Aesop’s space in this city of wind.
