Under a Roof

For the third time, artist Cheng Tsung FENG was invited to the Pangcah Festival, returning to the Danongdafu Forest Park in Guangfu Township, Hualien, to create a stage installation for the event. This work draws inspiration from the Amis people’s traditional communal building, the “Gathering House” (Palakuwan) — a space of deep cultural significance. Historically, it served as the heart of the community: a place for decision-making, the transmission of traditional knowledge and skills, the education of youth, and the performance of ceremonies. By reinterpreting this space through natural materials, FENG revives the collective memory of gathering and living together, using the stage as a focal point for performance and connection.

The installation features a sweeping arched stage constructed from bamboo and thatch. By rotating and reorienting the form, FENG sought to recreate the sensation of being inside a Gathering House, looking upward toward the roof and the sky beyond. In this moment, the audience assembled before the stage becomes symbolically united beneath a shared roof.

The bamboo framework supports hundreds of carefully fastened bundles of thatch, secured with rope, recalling the wisdom and tactile ingenuity of Amis architecture. Meanwhile, bamboo poles and the stage floor are accentuated with strips of tape arranged in radiating patterns, lending the installation both rhythm and visual intensity that amplify the energy of live performances. The stage further integrates with lighting and laser designs, transforming at night into a luminous focal point for the festival’s ongoing celebrations.

At its core, this work is more than a stage: it is a symbolic shelter where people come together. Here, festival-goers gather from all directions, reconnecting with old friends, encountering strangers, and sharing music, food, and culture under one roof. FENG’s installation not only honors the architectural and communal traditions of the Amis people but also extends them into the present, creating a contemporary space of resonance, memory, and shared experience.
