Nesting Plan VII Formosan Wild Boar
Nest Plan is a long-term artistic series by Cheng Tsung FENG, in which the artist learns directly from the “animal architects” who inhabit a site. By studying their instinctive methods of nest building, and then reinterpreting them with human construction materials and craftsmanship, FENG creates installations that pay homage to the remarkable creativity and survival wisdom embedded in nature.
At the Danongdafu Forest Park in Guangfu Township, Hualien, FENG built an outdoor installation inspired by the nesting behavior of the Formosan wild boar. Using locally sourced Japanese cedar and Makino bamboo, he translated the animal’s intimate and instinct-driven practice into a work of architectural imagination. The design draws from two key observations: first, the way wild boars pile up dry grass and branches to create their nests; and second, their peculiar habit of entering the shelter, turning around, and facing the entrance with their snouts — a gesture of constant vigilance and alertness to the world outside.
FENG expressed these behaviors through a layered structure of interlocking pentagons and hexagons. The forms overlap front to back, gradually shaping a semi-spherical enclosure that resembles the curled body of a small boar hidden within the nest. Around this wooden framework, he added bamboo branches wrapped in white tape, evoking the tangled yet ordered beauty of wild grasses. The result is an environment that feels simultaneously chaotic and harmonious, organic and architectural.
Visitors who step inside the installation are invited to sit along a ring of benches that encircle the inner space. From this vantage point, they can experience the sense of concealment and cautious observation that characterizes the wild boar’s life. The space offers both the physical comfort of shade and seating, and the imaginative experience of entering another creature’s perspective.
As part of the forest park, this work functions as a small gathering place for outdoor activities, while also serving as a quiet resting spot for those who pass through. More than a shelter, it becomes a poetic reminder of how human life is interwoven with the instincts, shelters, and habitats of the animals who share the land.
