Plant an Object

I meet a group of craftsmen involved with plants, encountered the plants which they are enamored on by various chances.  They live with sincerity and humility, and turn over a new leaf starting their second life through the plants and their hands.

“Plant an Object” is a term that I discovered from the way of creation from craftsmen.  To plant an object, they need to know the plants, soil, season, and to devote time to taking care of plants.

I selected some objects in this exhibition which fascinates me.  In the following 3 months, I want to introduce them and the object made by their hand to you.

There are no artwork descriptions at the exhibition site—just like when you see a big tree, a flower, or a leaf, there’s no need to ask, “Tree, flower, why do you look the way you do? What’s your concept?” Only the heavens might know. What you will find is a short statement from each artisan. Through these words and the objects on display, you can sense their attitude, personality, and point of view.

Chun Ko WEI

“A small table, a piece of wood—sit down. The knife rises and falls, wood shavings scatter, and form begins to emerge. Polished until it reflects the self—this is my practice with wood.”

“Bamboo’s endless transformations have fascinated me all my life. Through material experiments and design development, I’ve learned to work with it—discovering a formula to preserve its fresh green hue and a method for efficient production. The bamboo wares I wish to create, like their verdant color, are meant to remain eternally youthful.”

Ya Fang CHEN

"To me, all those forgotten scraps are treasures. I see beauty worth cherishing in them—my mission and passion is to uncover the extraordinary within the ordinary."

Shih Wen CHANG

“A well-crafted object is a form of thoughtfulness—it carries subtle intentions that need no explanation, yet are instantly felt. Creating such objects is a lifelong learning journey. Only by lighting the fire with your own hands can you sustain true passion. This is what I tell my students—and myself.”

Yin Min HUANG

“When natural fibers meet botanical dyes, it takes ninety rounds of wrestling with water before the full beauty of color reveals itself. I weave a piece of nature by hand, sharing my fascination with you—someone who embraces freedom.”

Shu Huan CHANG

“With sincerity and devotion, I extend the brilliant life of plants. With both hands, I offer the colors born from the earth. Natural dyeing is my pact with the land—we live in joy and harmony.”

Yu Hsiu MA

“I wait for the azaleas of spring, the lotus leaves and seed pods of summer, the astringent persimmons of autumn, and the Indian almonds and water caltrops of winter. I am always waiting for the colors the land bestows upon me—through every season, I wait with eager anticipation.”

Ming Yi LIU

“Fine dust floats through the air, wood stacked neatly to the side, machines hum with steady noise, and waves of cypress scent rise from the shavings. I am a child of Fengyuan. Returning to my hometown, I want to polish my childhood memories with design—restoring the former glory of Fengyuan’s woodworking heritage.”
