Beside Wood
There are 11 artists from different backgrounds. In this workshop, they start with learning wooden craft and material exploration, then add their personalities and unique experience. They explore 11 possibilities of living with wood.
In the summer of 2017, several woodworking mentors co-developed a professional training program for the Woodworking Studio at the National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute. Over two months, students spent half the time learning traditional skills and knowledge handed down through generations, and the other half experimenting with materials to explore unknown possibilities and personal perspectives. This combination allowed them to create uniquely individual works.
This small showcase presents works from eleven students of diverse backgrounds including homemakers, renovation company owners, veterans, mountain guides, patent specialists, woodworkers, product designers, school teachers, and recent graduates. Their footprints and creative explorations are displayed on the walls—each step rich and fascinating.
Mei-Hui Huang is skilled in crochet and uses yarn to weave gentle yet strong knots into hard wood. Wei-Sen Chao arranges countless precise cuts on wooden panels to explore the wood’s softness and flexibility, applying it in an elegant home altar. What happens when graffiti meets woodworking? Hsiao-Yun Hung uses spray-paint masking techniques to reveal hidden joinery on a desk, creating a graffiti-covered desk and chair that doubles as joinery art.

十一位不同背景的創作者，從木工學習與材料探索出發，再加上各自獨特的生活經驗與觀點，探索十一種與木相處的可能。
2017年暑假，多位木工藝老師共同為台灣工藝研究發展中心木工坊規劃人才培訓課程。兩個多月裡，同學們一半時間由老師帶領，手把手學習世代相傳的技術與知識，另一半時間則透過材料實驗，探索未知的可能性與個人觀點。兩者結合，成就了獨一無二的作品。
小型成果展中，展出了來自十一位學生的作品，他們有家庭主婦、裝潢公司老闆、退伍軍人、登山嚮導、專利師、木工工作者、產品設計師、學校老師以及剛畢業的學生。牆上展示了他們探索主題時的足跡，每一步都豐富且有趣。
黃美慧擅長鉤針編織，她以棉線在堅硬木料間織出溫柔卻堅固的結。趙偉森在木板上精密切割，探索木板的柔軟與延展性，並應用於一座簡雅的居家神龕。塗鴉與木工結合會是什麼樣貌？洪小雲以塗鴉遮噴技法，讓隱藏在桌內的榫卯躍然於桌面，這是一張滿是塗鴉的桌椅，也是一幅以榫作畫的塗鴉。
