Come.Unity
Psychologist Yung Yi CHEN and artist Cheng Tsung FENG co-designed an exploratory workshop for TEDxTaipei 2019 in response to the annual theme “Come.Unity: I.We.” Together, they led participants on a journey that began with self-awareness, delving into the psychological boundaries that define “you” and “me,” and gradually guided them toward building empathy and trust with strangers around them.
Through the collaborative creation of a large-scale visual art installation using traditional bamboo and rattan handcraft techniques, participants worked side by side to build the main visual centerpiece for the TEDxTaipei 2019 event. Each handcrafted unit was tagged with the name of its maker, and after the event, the installation was dismantled so each participant could take their piece home as a keepsake.
During the workshop on September 21, most of the participants had no prior experience. Some quickly picked up the skills and created their pieces efficiently and beautifully, while others worked more slowly and encountered unexpected flaws and misalignments. Those who finished early voluntarily made extra units to help the group. Despite being strangers, everyone generously asked for and offered help.
By the time we assembled the work at the venue, we discovered that the small flaws and variations in each unit actually complemented one another. The final piece, rather than looking uniformly perfect, radiated a unique charm—a living mosaic of different hands and individual expressions.
To participate, to take action, to embrace and understand differences—this is how “I” becomes “we.”
