Sailing Castle: Roppongi
Since its first edition in 2009, Roppongi Art Night has become one of Tokyo’s most anticipated cultural events. Now in its 14th year, the festival brings together 30 groups of artists presenting more than 50 programs and installations. Over three vibrant days, Roppongi transforms into a dynamic stage where diverse cultures and creative energies converge, offering audiences an immersive celebration of art and imagination.
Invited by Roppongi Art Night 2025, Taiwanese artist Cheng Tsung FENG created a new site-specific installation at the historic Tenso Shrine, a sacred site in Roppongi with a 641-year history. Continuing his Sailing Castle series that began at the Taiwan Lantern Festival in 2019, FENG presents the sixth work in the series, titled Sailing Castle: Roppongi, a poetic synthesis of the city’s skyline, architectural outlines, and cultural spirit.
In his Sailing Castle series, FENG draws parallels between a city’s skyline and the image of sails gathered in a harbor. Through the language of light and structure, he reconstructs urban silhouettes into luminous installations that evoke the rhythm of time, space, and collective memory. Each castle becomes a vessel carrying both architectural form and emotional resonance—where modernity meets the quiet beauty of traditional craftsmanship.
For Sailing Castle: Roppongi, Feng deconstructs, blends, and reassembles the profiles of Roppongi’s most iconic landmarks—including Tenso Shrine, The National Art Center Tokyo, Suntory Museum of Art, Tokyo Midtown, 21_21 Design Sight, Mori Tower, Sumitomo Roppongi Grand Tower, and the Roppongi Crossing. These elements converge into a wooden structure imbued with ritualistic presence, merging architectural memory with hand-crafted sensibility.
By illuminating the symbolic contours of Roppongi’s cityscape, FENG transforms the act of viewing architecture into an act of collective reflection. The installation stands as both a spiritual beacon and a temporal monument—a sailing vessel of light that carries the stories of the city, drifting quietly between tradition and modernity, the sacred and the urban.
