Hsinchu Lighting Arts Festival: Hakka Culture Zone
Beneath the oil-paper umbrella, one waits for daylight while watching the rice sieve ripple and scatter light across the water. Under the shan zii shu (Tree of Kindness), the round fan captures Hsinchu’s wind. Together, these gestures condense Hakka craft (oil-paper umbrella), everyday food culture (rice sieve), and the city’s natural character (wind) into a single space. The Hakka Culture Zone of Hsinchu Lighting Arts Festival presents Hakka culture in an unprecedented form—interweaving craft, cuisine, and landscape into delicate memories of daily life—an exhibition worth visiting by both day and night.
“Culture arises where people live; it cannot be separated from the environment. Wind brings the changing seasons, rain nourishes the crops, and people transform harvests into food, which in turn becomes the nourishment of culture. Beyond the familiar motifs of tung blossoms and floral fabric, we sought to reinterpret Hakka culture through different angles, to reveal the hidden yet enchanting charms that lie behind these symbols,” says Cheng Tsung FENG.

在傘下等待天光,觀察米篩目於湯水中流轉的光影,矗立於善之樹下感受團扇捕捉新竹的風,將客家工藝(油紙傘)、生活飲食(米篩目)、城市自然特性(風)濃縮一處。新竹光臨藝術節客家文化燈區,以前所未有的形式展現客家文化於工藝、飲食、風土間細膩的生活記憶,也是無論白天和夜晚都適合走訪參觀的展區。
「人能在一個地方生活形成文化,脫離不了與環境的關係。風帶來氣候變換、雨滋養作物、人又以作物造食,最後成為名為文化的養分,習以為常的客家生活文化題材,我們企圖用不同的角度來詮釋,想帶人們認識客家文化中,除了常見的桐花與花布外,還有許多隱藏在符號背後那些更迷人魅力。」范承宗說。

Rainy Dome

Umbrella made from oil paper is the symbol of reunion in Hakka culture. Within the Chinese character for umbrella "傘" also lies the presence of people. Inspired by this, artist Cheng Tsung FENG deconstructs and reorganizes traditional oil-paper umbrella craftsmanship, creating a massive umbrella structure that offers people a space to rest, shaded from sun and sheltered from rain. “It’s raining—come quickly and take shelter,” calls a voice familiar in Hakka life.
Standing in the center of “Rainy Dome,” a work formed by the fusion of three massive paper umbrella structures, one is surrounded by a mathematically precise framework of umbrella ribs stretching canvas into organic, leaf-like silhouettes. Stepping inside feels like entering a kaleidoscope of fantastical visuals—yet this is a tangible timber structure built from locally grown Taiwan cypress. The installation will be preserved on-site as a permanent feature of the park.
The curator of the Hakka culture Light Zone is artist Cheng Tsung FENG, a Hakka native born and raised in Hsinchu. In recent years, he has been pushing the boundaries of large-scale, durable outdoor installations. “I hope my works can become part of a city’s everyday life, something close to people,” he says. “The wisdom of traditional local crafts has always come from daily living. This work offers shade, shelter from rain, and a place to sit and rest. When people stay longer, they have more chances to appreciate the beautiful environment of this park.”

客家人視油紙傘為圓滿、團圓、緣分的象徵,而在「傘」字之中亦充滿了「人」,藝術家范承宗以紙傘為題,將傳統紙傘工藝解構與重組,用巨大的傘為人們撐起一座遮陽避雨的空間。天公呀,落水唷,大自家遽遽落來坐。
站在由三組巨大紙傘結構融合構成的「落水唷」作品中央,極具數理邏輯的傘骨結構張起如有機葉形輪廓的帆布,置身其中有如走進萬花筒般被奇幻視覺包圍,卻是實實在在由台灣國產材柳杉所搭建而成的木構空間,這件作品也將現地保留作為公園常設作品。
負責此次客家文化燈區的策展人是藝術家范承宗,他是在新竹出生長大的客家人,近年來不斷挑戰更大量體且能長期使用的戶外空間裝置,「我希望作品有機會能成為城市裡與人親近的一份子,地方的古老工藝智慧本就源於生活,這件作品可以提供人們遮陽、避雨、坐下休息,停留的時間變長了,就有更機會欣賞這座公園美好的環境訊息。」

The core concept of shan+ ziiˋ shu+ is to teach the basic structure and weaving techniques of traditional bamboo round fans, encouraging citizens to participate in the creative process. Building upon the same foundation, participants are free to express themselves through choices of colors, patterns, and designs, resulting in a uniquely personal fan for each person. Shan+ (fan) ziiˋ shu+ provides a traditional bamboo fan frame with four vertical bamboo ribs that converge at the base into four nodes, expanding upward like the unfolding of a fan, and forming a complete circle at the top. These bamboo frames display the fans created by citizens—400 small acts of kindness—collectively offered as prayers for the pandemic to pass quickly and for the arrival of a bright new year.
From afar, shan+ ziiˋ shu+ resembles outstretched feathers in flight; up close, it is composed of 1,500 bamboo fans. Architect Ming Yuan KAN transformed the craft of bamboo fan-making into a community co-creation project, inviting more than 400 elementary school children and local residents of Hsinchu to work together to assemble the piece. Like planting the seedlings of Hakka craft culture, the work finally took shape in the autumn as the pandemic eased. After the Light Coming Hsinchu Arts Festival ends, each fan—handmade by the community—will be carefully removed and returned to its maker, allowing each person to carry home one-thousandth of the shan+ ziiˋ shu+, continuing to fan gentle breezes in their everyday lives.

善之樹的核心理念,希望通過教導竹編團扇基本的構造及編織方法,讓市民共同參與創作,在相同的基礎上自由發揮,包含顏色、花樣等,創作出每個人獨有的團扇。善(扇)之樹提供四面竹構的傳統團扇骨架,下部收束為四個節點,由下往上擴散如同展開的扇面,並在頂部形成一個完整的圓。竹構骨架上掛上市民們創作的扇子,承載了400個小小的善念,向上天祈求,疫情快快過去,迎接嶄新美好的一年。
遠看像振翅的羽毛,近看是由一千五百面竹扇組構而成的「善之樹」,建築師甘銘源將竹扇工藝,透過地方共創行動,邀集四百多位新竹的國小學童和在地居民一起攜手製作堆疊而成,如同將客家手藝文化的幼苗種下,在疫情趨緩後的秋天終於成樹,而這些由眾人製作的扇子,也將在光臨藝術節落幕後,一一細心卸下,送還給製扇的每個人,人們有如握有善之樹的千分之一,於生活中持續搧起涼意。

Visual Flow draws inspiration from the traditional Hakka rice sieve, merging the taste of memory with the shimmering, shifting light and shadow in cool water. In Hsinchu—a city at the forefront of technology—the work is created through robotic-arm 3D printing, revealing once again the process of “melting and solidifying” as it takes form. Colors shift between opacity and transparency, enriching the visual flow. Layer by layer, the printed lines gradually evolve into winding curves; under the light, they refract into the eye, drifting lightly in space.
At the Youth Pavilion, ROSO COOP (artists Yu Ting SHENG and Shi Yuan WANG) use computational design to capture the mesmerizing ripples and reflections formed when a rice sieve touches still water. Through large-scale robotic-arm 3D printing, they magnify the delicate, fleeting beauty of that moment. The transparent installation transforms at night under dynamic lighting, producing unique refraction effects. With programmed rhythms shaping the visual tempo, the space becomes a magical play of light and shadow—a technological homage to the heritage of rice-based traditions.

「目流」整個作品製作過程比擬客家米篩目,將記憶中的味道結合了在涼水中光影的閃亮與變幻,而此次在科技領先的新竹,將藉由機械手臂3D列印,在列印的過程中重新展示「融化與凝固」的過程,顏色在「不透明與透明」之間豐富了整個視覺的流動,列印層層疊加,線條漸漸變化成蜿蜒的曲線,光線照射下,折射入眼,輕盈浮動。
在青少年館由ROSO COOP(藝術家盛郁庭、王識源)利用電腦數位演算技術,將米篩目落入涼水中擾動平靜水面時的迷人光影,透過機械手臂進行大型3D列印創造出作品「目流」,放大米篩目落入湯水中細膩而微小的魅力。透明的巨大裝置在夜晚隨著動態燈光展演,產生特殊的折射效果,加上不同的節奏編程控制,形成魔幻的光影空間,他們以自己擅長的科技藝術向傳統米食致敬。

Hsinchu Lighting Arts Festival: Hakka Culture Zone
The 2021 Light Coming Hsinchu Arts Festival culminated in its grand finale—the Hakka Culture Light Zone—held from October 22 to November 27. Located in Beida Park, the zone was curated by artist Cheng Tsung FENG, who collaborated with architect Ming Yuan KAN and the art collective ROSO COOP to reinterpret Hakka culture through three different craft traditions. In addition to three large-scale installation artworks, which were on view only until October 31, there was also a behind-the-scenes exhibition revealing the artists’ creative process. From November 2 to 4, the three participating artists hosted six workshops, inviting the public to create one-of-a-kind Hakka crafts.
When people think of Hakka culture, symbols such as tung blossoms and floral fabrics often come to mind. But as curator Cheng Tsung FENG explained: “We wanted to look deeper into the handcrafted objects, utensils, and culinary traditions that Hakka people have used in their daily lives over long periods. We explored how they were made and what makes them so captivating, offering audiences new perspectives and possibilities for appreciating these familiar themes.” In the end, they showcased three distinct crafts—wind, rain, and food—through three artists from diverse backgrounds, each working with different materials to create works that were individually unique and equally compelling.

新竹光臨藝術節客家文化燈區
2021新竹光臨藝術節,最終壓軸文化燈區於10月22日至11月27日展開,其中位於北大公園的客家文化燈區,由藝術家范承宗策展,攜手建築師甘銘源、藝術團隊ROSO COOP,以三種不同工藝,重新詮釋客家文化。除了3件大型裝置藝術作品,僅展出至10月31日、拆解藝術家製作過程的創作幕後小展覽也很精彩,11月2、3、4三天將由3位藝術家,舉辦6場工作坊,帶大家一起動手做獨一無二的客家工藝品。
一提到客家文化,多半聯想到桐花、花布等代表符碼,策展人范承宗說:「我們想找到客家人真的生活裡,長時間使用的各種手工物件、器物和飲食文化,深入地找到它們如何被做出來、最有魅力的部分,提供人們觀看這些熟習題材的不同視角與可能性。」最後,他們以風、雨、食三種工藝,透過三組背景不同的藝術家、使用三種不一樣的材料、讓三件作品各有特色、各自精彩。
