Fish Trap House Exhibition (for Juming Museum)

Fish Trap House Exhibition

Fish trap, an ancient fishing tool handcrafted from bamboo and rattan, appears in various traditional cultures and ethnic groups worldwide. The shape and size of fish traps in different regions are influenced by the materials available, the targeted catch, the setting environment, and the aesthetics of the specific ethnic group. Discarded fish traps not only carry the accumulated knowledge of human civilization but also hold memories of the harmonious coexistence between humans and nature in the past.

Artist Cheng Tsung FENG focuses on the memories of handicraft, experiencing a unique sense of space with his body. Depending on the environmental characteristics and behavioral attributes of each creation site, he perceives the surroundings as rivers and the people passing by as potential catch. With this perspective, he crafts distinct and exclusive Fish Trap House at each location.

He created his 8th Fish Trap House at the Juming Museum in Jinshan, New Taipei City. Influenced by the sculptures of artist Chu Ming within the park, he used several intersecting planes to form the structure, resulting in entrances, walls, and windows of the trap hut. Unlike traditional fish traps, his created Fish Trap House is not meant for catching fish but rather aimed at capturing people's curiosity and attention, inviting them to immerse themselves in its unique charm like fish swimming into it.

Scaled models and photographs of the entire Fish Trap House series are also concurrently exhibited within the park.
