workshop
The Tourism Department of Kinmen County Government held an art workshop in Dragon Palace III Kinmen, inviting Guang Yao CHEN, chairman of the Kinmen Wildlife Rescue and Conservation Association, to be the lecturer of the event. He led participants to sit down on the ground in the installation and share their knowledge of the ecology and current situation of Kinmen's animals, as well as inviting the public to work together to create small horseshoe crab painting artworks, which will be displayed next to Dragon Palace III Kinmen.

金門縣政府觀光處於龍宮裝置藝術內舉辦藝術工作營,邀請金門縣野生動物救援暨保育協會理事長陳光耀擔任活動講師,帶領學員一起在裝置作品中席地而坐,分享金門動物生態知識與現況,另外還邀請民眾一起製作小型的鱟彩繪造形作品,後續於龍宮裝置旁展出。

The horseshoe crab, often described as a living fossil, has survived on Earth for over 400 million years. Recognizable by its blue blood, armored shell, and long sword-like tail, this ancient creature has influenced human life in profound ways, from medical research to cultural imagination. In Kinmen, the horseshoe crab carries an especially symbolic weight, embodying the island’s unique connection to both land and sea. For this project, artist Cheng Tsung FENG draws upon his mastery of traditional craft to reimagine the creature’s striking form. Using wood, rope, and fabric, he constructs a monumental outdoor installation that evokes both fortress and sanctuary, a space imbued with ritualistic presence.
The structure rises from a timber framework that arcs outward in the shape of the crab’s protective shell. Layers of white canvas drape across the wooden skeleton, enclosing the space like a shelter while leaving intentional openings where the timber juts through. These exposed elements accentuate the tension between smooth surfaces and sharp edges, recalling the paradox of the horseshoe crab’s body — both shield and weapon, fragile yet enduring. The result is a sculptural fortress, a symbolic haven where people of the island and the sea may gather to find a sense of refuge and belonging.
As daylight fades, the installation undergoes a transformation. At night, subtle illumination spreads across the curved shell and its skeletal tail-like extension, casting an otherworldly glow. The structure seems to awaken, like a mythic beast rising from the shoreline, guiding the local community into a dreamlike encounter with Kinmen’s maritime stories. In its presence, one might imagine the hidden palaces of a dragon palace rising onto land, blurring the boundaries between ocean and island, myth and reality.
By stepping inside, visitors are invited to experience not only the monumental scale of the artwork but also its intimate spirit. Within its enclosure, the installation becomes a ceremonial chamber, offering moments of reflection, gathering, and awe. Through this work, FENG transforms the primordial form of the horseshoe crab into a contemporary shrine — both a tribute to nature’s resilience and a celebration of Kinmen’s living heritage.

鱟是生存在地球上超過四億年的活化石,藍血、硬甲、劍尾,對人類現代生活的影響力跨足醫療、生活、文化等領域,是金門極為重要的代表印象之一。此次藝術家范承宗透過擅長的傳統工藝,擷取鱟強烈的造形特徵,以木、繩材、布料搭建成一座堡壘,創作出樣貌特殊且具有儀式感的空間地景裝置。
以木材結構撐起鱟甲殼般的圓弧身形,輔以白色帆布覆蓋,包覆成為一座保護的堡壘,讓在海上、島嶼上的人們可以尋得一處心靈的庇護。帆布刻意切割空洞,使木材結構突出,以結構造形詮釋鱟甲殼上的平滑與銳利共存的印象。
結合金門的海洋與陸地景觀,入夜後牠將亮起光芒,和木構、尾部骨狀奇異造型,共譜出幽謐、神聖的表情,如一頭在夜裡甦醒的巨獸,帶領著在地島民們神往海洋故事裡的神秘陸上龍宮。邀請民眾一同感受鱟內部具有儀式感的空間。
