Bamboo Treasure Chest (for the Balvenie)
The Balvenie is a whisky distillery in Scotland’s Speyside region, known for handcrafting unique single malt whiskies using century-old traditional techniques. For 2020, The Balvenie invited Taiwanese artist Cheng Tsung FENG to create a limited edition set of 12 boxes for the Lunar New Year, titled "Bamboo Treasure Chest”.
Through this creative collaboration, The Balvenie and Cheng Tsung FENG explore the wisdom crystallized in traditional handcrafts, blending it with modern aesthetics and thinking to breathe new life into old craftsmanship.
In this work, Cheng Tsung FENG combines traditional bamboo birdcage making, bamboo furniture, and lantern craft into a three-dimensional oval form made of curved bamboo strips. This structure encases three bottles from The Balvenie’s Story Series, resting quietly inside. As viewers change their perspective, the golden whisky swirls interplay with the light and shadow on the bamboo strips, creating dynamic moiré patterns, as if the precious guests inside are awakening and releasing their enticing aroma.

百富The Balvenie是蘇格蘭斯貝賽地區利用百年傳承技藝,以手工方式釀造獨特單一麥芽威士忌的酒廠,今年百富邀請台灣藝術家范承宗為2020新年創作限量12座的|富•竹|百富春節限量手工禮盒,藉由這次的創作計畫,百富與范承宗一起在傳統手工製作的世界裡,尋找舊時代的智慧結晶,透過現代審美與思維,賦予這些老手藝新的面貌。
在這次的創作中,范承宗將製作傳統手工竹鳥籠、竹製傢俱及燈籠的老手藝揉合在一起,透過曲線竹條構成的立體橢圓球體,襯出三瓶靜置其中的百富故事系列酒款,隨著人們的視角轉動,金黃的酒紋盪漾在竹條的光影間虛實交錯,呈現出動態的光柵波紋,彷彿裡頭的嬌客正甦醒過來,發出令人蠢蠢欲動的香醇訊號。
